Matt Lyon

C86 showcases the work of Matt Lyon, a UK-based digital and mixed-media artist. After studying at The Slade School of Fine Art at UCL, he spent time teaching photography and graphic design while honing his skills as a graphic artist. Turning professional in 2008, he is now a non-stop doodler and creator of visual treats.

Matt’s work explores re-occurring motifs and themes laced with wild colour combos. A childhood obsession with creating fantastical buildings from Lego has now evolved into an ongoing series of house designs, recently accompanied by wild ships for both air and sea. Another series of illustrative typographical designs, dubbed ‘typoquotes,' continues to keep him busy as he brings life to letter-forms with his own distinctive use of shape and pattern. His designs have been widely published in books and magazines, and selected works have been exhibited in his hometown of London, as well as the US, Europe and the Far East. Represented by Jelly London, he is a contributor of work to both You Work For Them and New Standard Clothing, and is a member of the Black Rock Collective.

Q&A

What motivates you? The urge to improve upon what I’ve made in the past. This is the spark that pushes my creativity; it’s a momentum that guarantees a sense of progress while I wait for the next ‘wow’ moment. Any wise words of advice? Don’t rely upon Ffffound or your RSS feed to inspire you. Instead, discover your own interests and passions, and then follow them. But above all enjoy life, because you’ve only got one to live. Good topics for party talk? Super Nintendo or Sega Megadrive / Genesis (disclaimer: this topic could dominate a party conversation and never reach a conclusion or agreement)? What’s your preferred murder weapon – dagger, lead piping, candlestick, revolver, rope or spanner? God is dead, but his spirit lives on... discuss (this is a post-midnight topic). Favorite things to do when not creating? Sleeping, reading, listening to music too loud, eating peanut butter sandwiches, watching DVDs of films I’ve already got on VHS, playing Street Fighter III, getting lost online, going for walks at dusk, creating wonky mixes, daydreaming, and thinking of what next to draw... What would the ultimate job be? Designing a time machine.
