Mark Verhaagen

Mark Verhaagen

Mark Verhaagen is a Dutch illustrator currently living in Berlin. As a kid he started his creative career building tree houses in the back garden, making food sculptures and Lego space ships.

For composing weird electronic music his old Atari computer has been replaced by a shiny Apple machine. After high school, Mark decided to focus on drawing, so he attended art school to learn the proper job of an illustrator. Since his graduation in 2003, Mark has been enjoying the life of a freelance illustrator, working for international clients and having his work published in a broad range of books and magazines.

Inspiration comes from such things as his love for nature, traveling, retro design, pop culture and childhood memories. Mark tries to combine these elements into a style that fuels the inner child in all of us. When not working on commissions, Mark likes to keep in shape by making personal work.

Q&A

What motivates you? New directions and solutions, love and coffee. Any wise words of advice? Do what you love, love what you do. It can't get any cheesier than that, but I think it's a great starting point for success. Good topics for party talk? What's your favorite R. Kelly song?
Teaching foreign people dirty Dutch words.
How to do the moonwalk.
The weather.
Favorite things to do when not creating? Riding my bike on a sunny day and explore unknown parts of the town.
Going out with friends and see who can come up with the cheesiest dance moves.
Traveling, whether it is by plane or a walk around the block.
Speaking German and make people laugh about my bad accent.
What would the ultimate job be? I bought this book about a guy who's making tree houses for a living. How cool is that? Illustration-wise, I'd love to make a children's book. The idea that my illustrations would feed a kid's imagination, thus being part of their childhood memory is just awesome.
