Kristian Hammerstad

Kristian Hammerstad

Kristian is an illustrator and animator who lives and works in Oslo. He doesn't leave the house much, but spends most of his time drawing or thinking about what he is going to draw next.

After nearly a decade in the UK, he has moved back to his native Norway and finds the pace of life there more suited to his way of living. Although he has previously mostly worked in animation, he now tries to stick with just one image at a time.

Kristian has been making club posters for friends and friends' friends for years, but has recently also been getting requests from people and companies around the world for his artwork, including assignments from The New York Times and The New Yorker.

Q&A

What motivates you? My wife and family are my main motivations, but also the fact that I mostly get to do what I love for a living. Any wise words of advice? I don't really see myself as someone to be doling out wise words. But, if put on the spot I'd say maybe take your time and try to listen to your gut feeling. And always do your best, or you'll regret it forever. Good topics for party talk? I hardly ever talk at parties, I'm the boring guy by the dip. Favorite things to do when not creating? Reading comics and books, watching movies. Hiking is good. And maybe go for a beer? What would the ultimate job be? Getting to be the first to use a color that has never been seen by human eyes. What or whom inspires you? Films, comics, books, music, art. I tend to mostly enjoy things that were created before I was around or things that I grew up with in the '80s and '90s. If I get interested in something contemporary it is usually because of something older. Although, occasionally it can work the other way round, so don't sleep on the Now.
