Jon Burgerman

Jon Burgerman

Jon Burgerman makes vibrant, neoprimitive scrawls of shapes and colour. Jon Burgerman has pushed his monsterlike characters into compositions where cartoonlike forms are crammed on top of each other until they create a screaming mass of energy. Intensely prolific, Jon Burgerman has pushed the character obsession of the late 1990s into a far more interesting and strong direction. Think Walt Disney at an Inca temple on mescaline.

Jon Burgerman has built a strong reputation through his unique and colourful artworks of swooping, intertwining lines and hyper-emotional characters. Working across a variety of media that includes drawing, painting, print, animation, large-scale murals and toy design, Jon Burgerman's art retains a hand-made, hand-drawn quality. A sense of British self-deprecation, dry humour and modern-day anxiety imbues his work along with an enthusiasm for salads. Jon Burgerman has exhibited internationally since 2001, with his work in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Science Museum in London. He regularly gives lectures at universities and has presented his work at the prestigious Pictoplasma Character Design Conference (Berlin, 2006) where he also ran a doodling workshop for the entire audience.

Jon Burgerman has received a D&AD Silver Award nomination for his work for Levi's and has worked on many commercial projects for high-profile organizations, such as: BBC, SONY, KidRobot, AOL, The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, MTV, SKY, 55DSL, Diesel, Levi's, Gortex, Puma, Miss Sixty, Size?, Nike, Cadbury, Rip Curl, Tiger Beer, Virgin Atlantic, Pepsi, Science Museum, IKEA, Coca-Cola, IDN, Posca, Concrete Hermit, Hasbro, and an appearance on Blue Peter. Jon Burgerman received a D&AD Silver nomination for his work with Levi's in 2004; Mr. Burgerman customized A0-sized leatherette patches that were then hung in their flagship stores around Europe.

John Burgerman also received a D&AD nomination for his illustration work for Virgin HR in 2008 for a Human Resources Bible that was produced.

Q&A

What motivates you? Trying to better what I've already done and trying to right all my wrongs from the day before. Any wise words of advice? Be nice to people and try and live a happy life. And eat salad. Good topics for party talk? Do you floss and if so what kind of floss do you prefer?
Could Gordon Brown play Columbo in a British remake of the classic TV show?
What's your favourite out of the following animals: beaver, stoat, ferret or weasel?
Wizards Sandwiches: good fun or an accident waiting to happen?
Favorite things to do when not creating? Sleeping and eating, often at the same time. What would the ultimate job be? Creating an exhibition where all the art is edible (a bit like in the original Willy Wonka film). What or whom inspires you? Other artists, musicians, authors and cake bakers. You can find inspiration in anything really. I don't think you can look to be inspired, you just try and view and consume as many interesting things as possible and sometimes you end up finding them inspiring.
