Jacob Livengood

Jacob Livengood

Jacob is an illustrator, painter, and graphic designer residing in San Diego, California. The artist noticed he had a talent for drawing when he was 5 years old. Jacob says, "I remember drawing with my mom and my illustrations being better than hers so I kept at it."

According to Jacob, he did not take art seriously until a few years ago because he didn't think it could be a career after growing up hearing starving artist stories. Jacob grew up in awe of Saturday morning cartoons and the 90’s era of Nicktoons and really wanted to work for Nickelodeon. Sure enough, the cartoon art style is where Jacob believes he gets his fluid, chaotic inspiration from. While cartoons were Jacob's earliest inspiration, as he grew up he became inspired by painters like Warhol, Picasso, and Basquiat. Contemporary artists that inspire him are Gary Baseman and Jesse LeDoux. Music is a large inspiration to Jacob as well, especially artists like Morrissey, The Cure, and Bright Eyes. Although it is still early in Jacob's foray into the art world, he has been featured in a number of magazines as well as high profile websites and has worked with clients such as the Coachella Music Festival and Threadless. Jacob says, "Overall, I just hope people see something unique in what I do and appreciate it to help me thrive and hopefully inspire."

Q&A

What motivates you? The prospect of becoming better with every piece and learning new techniques that I may not have felt I was capable of motivates me. Art is exciting to me because there is so much room for growth and the availability of different mediums is refreshing because maybe when painting becomes old to me I have a new venue around the corner. I also like the idea of my work inspiring someone who might not think they are artistically inclined to give it a try anyway. Any wise words of advice? I have had some low points in my artistic career, so all I can say is don't give up and push through. The trying times in life can be the most artistically rewarding. Good topics for party talk? Art History, Music, Morrissey, Warhol. Favorite things to do when not creating? Sleeping has always been a good friend of mine, but lately I have started reading more graphic novels - mostly indie style comics. Reading tends to help me get out of creative slumps. What would the ultimate job be? My ultimate job would be working as a successful freelance painter and illustrator. At home all day just creating without the tie down of the 9 to 5. Art has become more lucrative over the past two years but I’m not quite there yet.
