Dave White

Dave White

Born in Liverpool, 1971, and having studied fine art at Liverpool University (in John Lennon's old studio), Dave White has enjoyed success from the early inception of his career with his vigorously energetic brand of contemporary pop art.

Selected for the Northern Graduates show at the Royal College of Art in 1994, Dave White went on to exhibitions in London and international art fairs with his series of animal portraits courtesy of Anthony Brown and Connaught Brown of Albemarle Street. Highlights of this period include the Blue Cross Centenary exhibition at Sotheby's in 1997 alongside David Hockney and group shows at Connaught Brown with Picasso, Dubuffet, Miro, and others.

From 2002, Dave White's work was celebrated for his dedication to a sneaker series, which brought international exhibitions and appearances with companies like Nike, which own a series of his work in their corporate collection. His collection was exhibited globally, examples including the People's Square Exhibition Hall in Shanghai to the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center in the U.S.

In 2007 Dave White was commissioned by Coca-Cola to create a painting of Jay Z's new design for Cherry Coke. Attending the A List event in New York, White's work was exhibited at the celebrated Dia Center for the Arts. The year 2007 also brought Dave White's debut solo exhibition during Art Basel Miami, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, featuring large-scale superhero portraits; White was featured in the Art Basel press and Miami TV and radio. More recently, in 2008, Dave White held his debut solo exhibition of his vintage military-inspired pop art portraits in a show entitled Planes, tanks and automatics at the Truman Brewery during Frieze week, which was featured in The Wall Street Journal and "sold briskly" (Bloomberg Press, NY) in spite of recent economic turmoil. Stephen Adams of The Daily Telegraph recently described him as "one of Britain's most feted up-and-coming painters."

Q&A

What motivates you? I have always loved creating images ever since being a kid, making countless drawings of the latest movie characters or toys, and that has always stayed with me. Exploring subjects and letting the series develop is really exciting for me; watching things develop through exploration. Any wise words of advice? I would say go with your heart and instincts, love what you do and make the best of every opportunity that comes your way. Good topics for party talk? What was the best toy you ever owned? The best burger joint on earth is where? What is the worst record ever made and why? Favorite things to do when not creating? I am a serious runner, and have always been a video game fanatic since the age of 7. Love hip hop, vinyl toys, fixies, and of course sneakers and the usual boys-who-have-never-grown-up-stuff. What would the ultimate job be? I always wanted to be a navy pilot but I just couldn't put the paints down, I love what I do so I guess I have the ultimate job.
