Dave Kinsey

Dave Kinsey

Dave Kinsey was born in Pittsburgh in 1971 and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and the Art Institute of Atlanta before moving to California in 1994 to pursue a career as a designer and fine artist. His work captures the universal essence of the human condition mainly through a symbolic portrayal of contemporary life.

Working spontaneously, and utilizing a range of mediums, he constructs multi-layered, textured environments easily likened to the complexities of the human experience. Dave founded BLK/MRKT Gallery (and Kinsey/DesForges) in 2001, allowing him to provide a crossroads for a new movement of emerging and electrifying iconoclasts. In addition to these pursuits, his fine art has been shown in galleries and museums worldwide. Exhibitions include the URBIS Museum in Manchester, NEXT Chicago, Lazarides Gallery, Art Brussels in Belgium and most recently Joshua Liner Gallery in New York City. He has also been featured in publications such as The New York Times, The Times London, LA weekly, BLK/MRKT One and Two, Beyond The Street and has been invited to speak at numerous institutions including the University of Florida, Art Center in Pasadena, UCLA, Montserrat College of Art and the Semi-Permanent conference in Sydney, Australia.

Q&A

What motivates you? Good music at full volume, living in nature, photographing deer and quail in my driveway—sounds boring, but it isn't—seeing good museum exhibitions and experiencing great art and energetic cities. Any wise words of advice? Unlearn. It's something I do my best to try and live by. Good topics for party talk? Most party talk is just trash talk to get you through the evening, but art is my all-time favorite topic. And if you connect with the right people, things like politics, global and social issues can become interesting, but in my experience that's a rare thing—maybe I need to find the right party. Favorite things to do when not creating? I like to travel, watch birds and movies, hike in the Giant Sequoia National Park, swim in my river, spend time with my wife and our animals & just sit and stare into the wild. What would the ultimate job be? To be honest, I have the ultimate job. I wouldn't trade this for anything.
