Chrissy Angliker

Chrissy Angliker was born in Zurich, Switzerland, and raised in Greifensee and Winterthur. Her earliest ambitions were to grow up to be a stuntwoman and to make art. From a very young age she experimented with stone, clay, and found objects, among other materials. Beginning in 1996, she was fortunate to study with the Russian artist Juri Borodachev, who became her artistic mentor for several years.

In 1999, at age 16, Chrissy moved to the States to study fine art at the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts, and after much encouragement from her parents she then pursued a degree in industrial design at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Chrissy has developed a profound understanding of three-dimensional design, relationships between objects, and creating character through form. During her studies at Pratt, Chrissy won many national and international design awards. She was selected for numerous juried shows, including ICFF.

Chrissy has a diverse portfolio that spans the world of design, including furniture, lighting, product design, way-finding, display design, graphic design, and branding.

In 2008, after a six-year hiatus due to her design studies and work in the professional field, Chrissy's creative expression shifted back to painting. Since then she has cultivated her artwork in addition to design. In 2009, she and design partner, Daniel LiCalzi, founded Design Since, Inc.

Chrissy's work in fine art and design continues to incorporate her political, spiritual, and humanitarian perspective. Her work has been published in magazines and books worldwide.

Q&A

What motivates you? As far back as I can remember I was always analyzing my surroundings and then creating things as a response to what I saw and experienced. I think it's this behavior that organically led me down the paths of art and design. It's something I love to do and need to do in order to feel happy and grounded. Any wise words of advice? Be honest in creating your work. Make sure you define to yourself what art really means to you and don't feel limited by how you should express it. I believe in the process of creating being mine and the end product being everybody else's. Good topics for party talk? The weather, scandals, 2012, and boys. Favorite things to do when not creating? Be with friends. Have a beer, go fishing with my design partner, Dan... What would the ultimate job be? Hmmm... to be hired by the queen or Neil Young to do their portrait. Just a thought... I like to do my own thing with painting as well as branching out into the design field. Since I'm an industrial designer as well sometimes I can't help but want to blur the line between art and design. I just did a collaboration with an English table top company where the paintings are printed on dinner plates. That was very interesting because I had to use both my art and design brain at the same time. I'm into that. Same with the AOL project. It's placing art in the field of function and make it appropriate to the needs of the project. Fun, fun, fun. What or whom inspires you? Right now I'm fascinated by things that can't be controlled but influenced. Thats what I'm exploring with my paintings.
